OpEN is formed of over 100 affiliated scientists specialising in open ecosystems, who work closely with the public and stakeholders. Global representation from across the natural and social sciences contributes to OpEN’s interdisciplinary approach. The activities of the network are managed by a steering committee.
Steering Committee
Dr Caroline Lehmann is a tropical ecologist and biogeographer focused on grassland and savanna ecosystems with 15 years experience working in Australia, India, Southern Africa and Madagascar. Caroline is based at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh and University of Edinburgh where she leads the Functional Biogeography research group, and is also affiliated with the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa. Caroline is the founder of OpEN.
Anya Courtenay is a postgraduate biogeographer and the secretariat of OpEN. Anya’s research investigates the environmental limits of plants in Afrotropical savannas/grasslands and impacts of global change. She is part of the Functional Biogeography lab group at the University of Edinburgh and Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. Anya also manages the Global Grassy Group sampling protocol and data.
Dr Alessandra Fidelis is a vegetation scientist focused on tropical grasslands and savannas. She has been studying South American open ecosystems for at least 15 years, with research about fire, seed and invasion ecology, looking at processes above- and belowground. She leads the Lab of Vegetation Ecology at the Universidade Estadual Paulista in Brazil.
Professor Forrest Fleischman is an environmental social scientist who studies how people make decisions about and use savanna and forest ecosystems, with a focus on South Asia and Central and North America. He is an Associate Professor at the University of Minnesota.
Professor Catherine Parr is a community and ecosystem ecologist specialising in tropical biodiversity, ecosystem functioning and ecosystem responses to human-induced environmental change. Her work has spanned ants to elephants and she works across open ecosystems globally, with particular expertise in African savannas. Catherine is based at the University of Liverpool, and is affiliated to the Universities of Pretoria and Witwatersrand in South Africa.
Dr Natashi Pilon is a plant ecologist specialised in tropical open ecosystems restoration and conservation, actively working in South America savannas where she is an expert in the biodiversity of the grasses and forbs of the Cerrado. Natashi is a postdoctoral research scientist currently based at the University of Campinas (Unicamp), Brazil.
Dr Rose Pritchard is an environmental social scientist whose research explores how people are impacted by and adapt to environmental challenges. Her research aims to help identify just and equitable pathways for sustainable futures and to understand how human wellbeing can be maintained in the face of environmental change. Rose is a Presidential Fellow in Social-Environmental Systems in the Global Development Institute (GDI) at The University of Manchester.
Dr Jayashree Ratnam is an ecologist who studies mixed tree-grass ecosystems in India and Africa. Her research investigates the history, ecology, function and conservation of tropical savannas, grasslands and dry forests.. She is based at the National Centre for Biological Sciences, India, where she is the Director of the Wildlife Biology and Conservation Program.
Professor Vicky Temperton is a temperate grassland ecologist based at Leuphana University, Germany. She works mainly using field and greenhouse experiments to test ecological theory for ecological restoration. She is on the board of directors of the Society for Ecological Restoration and in recent years her interests have focussed on understanding multi-functional outcomes in restoration and the role of stakeholders and policy in framing and achieving effective outcomes.
Dr Joseph Veldman is a plant ecologist who studies grasslands, savannas, and forests of the American tropics and subtropics. He is an assistant professor in the Department of Ecology and Conservation Biology at Texas A&M University in College Station, USA and is a research affiliate of the Bolivian Institute of Forestry Research (IBIF) in Santa Cruz, Bolivia.
Professor Yadvinder Malhi is Professor of Ecosystem Science at the University of Oxford, a Fellow of the Royal Society, current President of the British Ecological Society and past President of the Association for Tropical Biology and Conservation. Malhi is a renowned ecologist who focuses on ecology and carbon dynamics of tropical systems and impacts of climate change through field studies, experiments, monitoring and modelling, and developing the GEM plot network. His recent work has emphasised the importance of megafauna and their loss in shaping ecosystems.
